Singleton sat in a quiet little café in Little Rock with a view of the sidewalk outside. So far the woman that had met him here hadn’t said anything important, and he was just about ready to call an end to the meeting. He needed something that shed light on this puzzle of Melinda’s death. His clients needed those answers, and frankly, now, so did he.

“Melinda probably found out he wasn’t who he said he was,” she murmured, and his attention piqued. “I’d told her he seemed too good to be true, and I did a little snooping even though she told me to leave it alone.”

“What did you find?” he asked carefully, hoping it wasn’t a rehash of what he already knew.

“First nothing and then I had a friend run his social security number.” She shook her head. “It matched a seventeen-year-old named Clyde Dorset. Dorset was arrested in connection with a murder and bank robbery in 1980.”

“Did you learn anything else?”

She nodded. “One of the three others involved was Barley Nash. He survived the shootout, but he died two days later in the jail infirmary.”

“Cops shot him?”

“There was a fire at the house they were hiding in, and they thought everyone had died. Nash got scraped up getting out. With his last breath, Nash swore Clyde was the one who’d knifed him. I hit a dead end after that.”

“How’d you get that information?” he asked, curious. You couldn’t talk to a dead man.

“His brother. He said he spoke to the guard who’d found Nash.”

“Where was this?”

“That was in Chicago,” she told him.

“Thanks for your help,” he said.

“Melinda’s family left her a quarter of a million dollars, which had grown to close to a million by the time she died. Did her kids get the money? She was going to split it three ways when they turned eighteen. You know, it was going to be a nest egg for her and a starting-out present for them.”

Son of a bitch. He’d killed her for her money, but why else had he killed her? What other secrets had Melinda taken to her grave with her?
